About the Teach






It started with an Instagram page and a craving for chocolate.

For two years, I substitute taught in my county covering a gamut of ages, subjects, and classes. Blind to the plans that awaited me each day, I wound up teaching through field trips, jogathons, fire drills and giant inflatable water slides, among other, much more boring things. I always appreciated when the teacher left chocolate with the lesson plans. I started voicing this in addition to my thoughts on substituting. So my little collection of educational musings and snapshots was birthed. 

My penchant for the rich candy endured as I taught full-time in the first, third and fourth grades. Truly, as my fellow educators know, some days leave you grabbing for nothing other than the sweet, reliable treat. 

I hope this page is as handy to you as my prevailing snack...because what teacher doesn't need chocolate?

Teachers are formed out of a constellation of imprints from other teachers. We learn our ways by watching and doing what better teachers have done before us. You probably have mentor teachers and professors who have shaped you into this newbie teacher, this teacher you are going to be. Why a Quiet Start is Necessary

I'm sorry to say it took me so long to realize it was possible. It was halfway through my college internship year. I was tasked with watching our class of second graders that morning while my mentor teacher was in a meeting. The morning started pretty typically. The group of eight- and nine-year-olds were meandering, chatting, sharpening pencils, reading books, sharpening pencils again until they were unrecognizable pointy nubs, playing by the water fountain. This was our normal scene. I assumed this behavior was age-appropriate and therefore fine to settle with.  Then the teacher next door walked in to ask me something.
